Languages
The use of marine data depends on being able to effectively exploit computing systems to allow data and metadata to be robustly stored, effectively processed and quality controlled, and be analysed to gain new scientific insight.
Unix shell and command languages:
- BASH (Bourne Again SHell) from the GNU Project
Commonly used interpreted, high-level programming languages in the marine community include:
- Matlab is a paid-for programming and numeric computing platform from the MathWorks
- R is a free software environment for statistical computing from the R Foundation
- Python is a free general-purpose programming language from the Python Software Foundation
Further information on the range of languages in common use in the marine science community is coming soon.
