GOOS
The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) includes various national and regional efforts to observe the global ocean on a sustained basis. The ocean observing systems comprise a set of ocean observing networks, many of which are tracked through Ocean OPS (formerly Jcommops):
- Argo network of profiling floats on Ocean OPS – see our summary of Argo
- Data Buoy Co-operation Panel (DBCP) network of surface floats on Ocean OPS
- Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) of fixed sea level observing stations on Ocean OPS, including:
- Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL)
- The UK’s National Tidal and Sea Level Facility (NTLSF)
- GO-SHIP (Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program) on Ocean OPS
- Ocean Gliders on Ocean OPS
- OceanSITES of observations from fixed locations in the open ocean – on Ocean OPS
- Ship Operations Team (SOT) on Ocean OPS comprised of:
- VOS (Voluntary Observing Ship) Scheme for underway data
- ASAP (Automated Shipboard Aerological Programme) releasing weather balloons
- SOOP (Ship-of-Opportunity Programme) deploying XBTs
There are other observing networks that are not currently tracked through Ocean OPS, such as:
- Global HF Radar Network
- Animal-Borne Instruments (AniBOS) and includes:
There are GOOS Regional Alliances that work to develop observations across ocean basins:
- All-Atlantic Ocean Observing System (AtlantOS)
- Black Sea GOOS
- Global Ocean Observing System in the Indian Ocean (IOGOOS)
- IOC in the Caribbean GOOS (IOCARIBE-GOOS)
- Mediterranean Oceanographic Network for the Global Ocean Observing System (MONGOOS)
- Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) who provide:
- Sustained Arctic Observing Network (SAON)
- See below for various Pacific-related alliances
There are also GOOS Regional Alliances, including but not limited to:
- Australian Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS)
- EuroGOOS and EOOS
- GOOS Africa
- GOOS Regional Alliance for South-East Pacific (GRASP)
- North-East Asian Regional GOOS (NEAR-GOOS)
- Regional Alliance for the Upper Southwest and Tropical Atlantic (OCEATLAN)
- Pacific Islands GOOS (PI-GOOS), part of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)
- Southeast Asian GOOS (SEAGOOS)
- US Integrated Ocean Observing System (US IOOS)
